Omar Barnes Defending champions Urban Knights and Spanish Town Spartans will clash in this year's finals of the Flow/ National Basketball League (NBL), following semi-final wins over Pembroke Hall and Tivoli Gardens Wizards, respectively, at the University of Technology on Tuesday night. The Knights, who are seeking their second consecutive hold on the island's premier basketball trophy, were in a no-nonsense mood as they easily dispatched Pembroke Hall 82-55 to win the series 2-0. Dave Blackwood led the way for the Knights, with a game-high 16 points. They raced to 38-18 lead at half-time and 52-34 after three quarters. Oneil Mundle (14 points, 13 rebounds) and Omar Barnes (12 points, six rebounds) also contributed well for the Knights, while Kevin Whitter, with nine points, was the main scorer for Pembroke Hall. The Knights will now battle Spanish Town Spartans in the best-of-three final, which begins on August 8. The Spartans, who are this year's reigning mid-season and Southern Conference champions, recorded an exciting 67-60 win over former champions Tivoli Gardens Wizards, also on Tuesday night, to secure a 2-0 series win. "It was a good overall game from us," said Oneil Brown, the Knights' coach. "We know what to expect from the Spartans. They beat us twice in the mid-season and conference finals, but we lost both games because we weren't rebounding the ball properly. "However, we are doing a much better job now on our rebounding and with 14 days off, we will get there, and I am confident that my team will do it," Brown said. In the second match, the Calvin Martin-coached Spartans were led to victory mainly on a game-high 20 points from national representative Lynford Brown. Javon Bailey got 12 points and six assists. The Spartans led 37-27 at half-time and 59-44 at the end of the third period. Brandon Grant (17 points), Andy Smith (16 points, 15 rebounds) and Anthony Farquharson (16 points, eight rebounds) were the main contributors for the Wizards. "It should be a very competitive finals because I think both teams are evenly matched," said Martin. "Urban Knights are quicker, and we are much bigger and so it should a very exciting series." |
