Alleged shoplifter to reappear in court

A woman who is charged with shoplifting is to return to court next month to prove that she did not intentionally place several items from a supermarket in her bag.

Alvarene Smalling is to return to court on August 19, and her bail has been extended.

It is alleged that on the day of the incident, the accused was observed by security personnel placing three Lasco milk products and two bottles of extra-virgin olive oil in her bag.

The items are said to value over $2,000.

The attorney representing the accused told the court that her client inadvertently placed the items in her bag, and it wasn't intentional.

Smalling also told the court that when she realised the mishap, she tried to pay for the items, however, a security officer grabbed her and placed her in a room for about two hours.

Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey frankly told Smalling's attorney that her defence for the case to go for trial is weak.
