Man chops uncle for $25

A nephew who chopped his uncle with a machete after accusing him of stealing his $25, was sentenced to three months imprisonment in The Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

Convicted on a charge of unlawful wounding is Oshane Powell from Grants Pen, St Andrew.

The uncle told the court that he suffered a wound to his left hand after his nephew chopped him in a surprise attack while he was at a shop on the day of the incident.

The court heard that the nephew had left $75 in his room unattended and returned to find only $50.

He immediately suspected that the coins were removed by his uncle so he armed himself with a machete and went in search of the complainant, who he found at a shop and attacked him.

Interestingly, the defendant's mother who witnessed the incident told Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey that she had seen her son armed with the machete but asked someone to discourage him from using it because she and him "do not talk".

"Mi no deal with him," she said.

When asked how long he plans to stay in jail for his actions, the defendant replied, "one month" but was given an additional two.
