Cop on rape charge to face court

A police constable who has been charged with rape is to appear in the Yallahs Resident Magistrate's Court today.

The accused was taken into custody earlier this month on reasonable suspicion of committing a sexual offence and charged following a ruling from the director of public prosecutions.

The constable's arrest and charge follow investigations by the Centre for the Investigation of Sexual Offences and Child Abuse, into the sexual assault on a schoolgirl under the age of 16.

It is reported that the child was impregnated late last year, and the matter was quickly brought to the attention of the police.
