Alleged lotto scammer charged in US
Andre Williams, STAR Writer

A Jamaican was nabbed and charged in the United States for his alleged involvement in the illicit, multi-million dollar lottery scam.

The New York State Police arrested Hopeton LaBeach, 55, on allegations that he stole money from an 89-year-old resident.

The website www. fox24news.com, reported that LaBeach used a sweepstakes scam to obtain money from the victim.

Police reported that LaBeach contacted the resident by phone and issued instructions that money should be sent to an address in White Plains. Further allegations are that he was involved in similar scams targeting the elderly.

Investigators theorise that LaBeach keeps part of the money collected and sends the rest abroad.

The charge laid against Labeach is characterised as grand larceny under the state's hate crime statute since he targeted the elderly.

He is also charged with money laundering and being involved in a scheme to defraud, in the first degree.

LaBeach was arraigned in Bethlehem Town Court Wednesday and remanded to Albany County jail.
