Lorna Reid - dedicated to God's work

Lorna Reid

GEORGE HENRY, STAR Writer

There is nothing more fulfilling than to be a good child of God. That is a statement that has resonated with Lorna Reid.

Reid, who is a member of the Cheapside New Testament Church of God in Manchester, is the president for the Ladies Ministry, Sunday school teacher, church secretary and president for her Family Training Hour.

It is now 21 years since she surrendered her life to Christ, but prior to her conversion, she thinks she was a loving sinner.

"I was a loving sinner who knew absolutely nothing about Christ. Being a Christian is a milestone for me; but without fasting and prayer I could not have made it with the Lord over the past 21 years. Since my new pastor the Reverend Esther Higgins came to my church, my Christianity has been a one hundred per cent milestone," testified Reid.

The Sunday school teacher gave her life to God while she was in attendance at a crusade, not at her present church, but while at another denomination which was not liked by her husband.

"My husband did not like the church where I got saved. His family was from a New Testament Church of God at Bombay in Manchester. One of his family members came to me and asked me to accompany her to the church after I got saved, even though I was not yet baptised; and from that day I have been a New Testament Church of God member," shared the church secretary.

She noted that it is now two years since she has been serving as president of the Ladies Ministry at her Cheapside church. However, Reid said she worked as assistant president for 14 years. In her capacity as secretary, she has been serving for three years; and her work as Family Training Hour president is now going 14 years.

"I like to work for God, because I can help people. I like helping people. Once you dedicate yourself to God, sometimes He speaks to us and tells us to go and give someone something; and when you go you definitely know that that person needs something," shared Reid.

Although Reid has her hands full at her church, she said that serving as the ladies president is the work she enjoys doing the most for God. She acknowledged that she loves to work with the ladies because they keep calling on her to lead them.

Reid was quick to point out that being a Christian is very challenging. However, despite this, she has been able to deal effectively with all her challenges by engaging in a lot of prayer and fasting and keeping close to the Lord.

"The Christian life has its ups and downs, and without fasting and prayer you cannot make it. So I do a lot of fasting and praying in order to deal with the many challenges which come my way as I walk with Christ," said Reid, who also confessed that she engages in a 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. fast every Tuesday.

The church leader's favourite scripture is Psalm 121. Her favourite song is If it had not been for the Lord on my side.

She wants all persons, especially women, who have not yet surrendered their life to the Lord to do so before it is too late.

"Without Christ in your life you are nothing. Nobody but Christ can help you. I am not saying that coming to Christ you will get everything instantly; but the best thing in life is to give your heart to the Lord, especially while you are young. He (God) says young man I call upon you because you are strong. Do not wait until all your energy and so on are gone when you cannot do anything for him," said Reid.

She pointed out that there are far too many persons around who want what Christ has but do not want Christ. Reid added that whenever they feel pain they cry out for Jesus to help them but refuse to surrender their life to him for a better life.
