Gay ready for Bolt challenge

A rejuvenated Tyson Gay is ready to embark on a mission to once again be the world's top sprinter, after a powerful performance at last week's USA National Trials.

Gay blasted past a field, which included Olympic bronze medallist Justin Gatlin, to post a brisk 9.75 in the 100m, the fastest time in the world this year, before posting another world-leading mark in the 200m, dismissing the field with a time of 19.74.

Bolt, the world record holder over both sprint events, has got off to an average start to the season. He opened with one of the slowest time of his professional career, 10.08 in the Cayman Islands, followed by a loss to Gatlin in Rome. Bolt was also a winner at Jamaica's national trials and despite posting a less-than-impressive time than Gay - 9.94; was never really pressed in the race. In his lone 200m outing this season, the big Jamaican clocked and impressive 19.74. Despite having the better season to date, Gay is, however, keeping his focus.

"It's no secret Usain Bolt is obviously the greatest of all time and he's definitely going to be prepared," Gay said of the looming showdown at the World Championships in Moscow. The American, however, did not hide the fact that he was looking forward to the challenge.

"I'm looking forward to it man," Gay told USA publication thestaronline (thestar.com).

"It's going to be tough, tough on the body, tough on the mind."

Gay, who claimed the sprint double at the 2007 World Championships in Osaka, beat Bolt over the 200m distance on that occasion. The American has failed to finish above the Jamaican in any major event since. He is, however, encouraged by a recent spell of good health, after recovering from hip surgery..
