In spite of her many injury setbacks, including two knee surgeries, Sherone Simpson defied the odds to once again book her place on yet another Jamaica team to an international event. The 28-year-old 2006 Commonwealth Games 200 metres champion finished as runner-up in both the 100m and 200m at the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association/Supreme Ventures Limited National Senior Championships with times of 11.03 and 22.55 seconds, respectively. "I feel good, it was very hard coming into the championships, but I knew what I had to do to make the team, and I'm very happy that I was able to and finished healthy, knowing how I was physically coming into the Championships and to be able to make the team, especially in the 100m," Simpson told STAR Sports. "Because with the rounds, I have done around three 100 metres, so I'm very pleased with myself." However, Simpson is not content with just having made the team, but instead, intends to go back into training and plot how to finish among the medals in both events at the August 10-18 World Championships in Moscow. "I just want to go back to train for the championships and then closer to the meet I'll know what to expect," the former Manchester High school student said. "My aim is to medal in both events and I have to go back and see what I have to work on." The 2008 Olympics 100m silver medallist does not believe she is at her best just yet, but is pleased with the progress being made. "I have to give thanks, I'm still not at a 100 per cent, but I'm getting there and I'm very happy." |
