EVIL SPIRIT OR A HOAX?

Pastors call for more investigation into mystery case

CHAD BRYAN, Star Writer

At least one member of the nation's clergy has expressed doubts about the recent occurrences of ghost happenings in a section of the country.

Reverend Nigel Pusey of the North Street United Church, said that supernatural occurrence being reported in the media recently must be investigated as what is transpiring appears to be manufactured and is quite irresponsible.

"In my opinion, not all of it is supernatural. These things exist and do occur but some of it is manufactured if you ask me. I find it strange that these things only occur at a specific time. I think it warrants serious investigations before people make pronouncements of ghosts. In my mind these things need to be investigated," the reverend said.

"My understanding of demonology is that if a spirit is going to occupy somewhere or take over it will do so. I have my doubts. I have had to do exorcisms. How we are going about all of this is irresponsible behaviour. What is going on is foolishness."

In recent weeks, there has been quite a bit of media coverage for at least one case in St Elizabeth where a family is said to be haunted by ghosts hell-bent on chasing them from their house. THE STAR also previously carried another story in Portmore, St Catherine, where a woman claimed to have got into a wrangle with a ghost, which reportedly knocked her unconscious.

proper assessment

When THE STAR contacted Reverend Dr Stevenson Samuels of the New Testament Church of God he agreed with Pusey that there needs to be proper assessment of these situations but he was unwilling to say the St Elizabeth case was a hoax.

"Any experience people and the community have should be taken seriously. It can be authentic and these people seem pretty serious about that. I can't stay parishes away and say that this is a hoax but what needs to happen is a proper assessment as to what is going on," Samuels said.

For Pastor Philbert Johnson of a Portmore-based Church, he believes that people should take these incidents of the supernatural seriously.

"We should take it seriously. The same way God and other good spirits are real, so there are evil spirits," he said. He also called for an investigation to be done into the reported cases.
