Sky Juice celebrates Birthday...in classic dancehall style
Curtis Campbell, STAR Writer

Sky Juice recently celebrated his birthday at Oneil's Place in an authentic dancehall atmosphere.

The music was played by veteran sound systems, and several notable '90s selectors made their presence felt.

The event started extremely late; however, those who turned out early, including Sky Juice, managed to keep themselves occupied by chatting, drinking liquor, and rocking to the sound of iconic sound system Metro Media.

By 1 a.m., patrons were having a good time jamming to some solid hits from Frankie Paul like Sarah, I know The Score, and Pass The Tu-Sheng Peng.

"Yu think music sweet, wait till likkle more," the DJ warned.

He then went on to play some even older songs like Police In Helicopter by John Holt. The song was well received, and the patrons were rewarded with an encore, courtesy of the selector.

The DJ also paid homage to the mothers and potential mothers at the party by dedicating specific songs to them. One such song that got favourable response was Buju Banton and Wayne Wonder's I Don't Know Why.

Sky Juice's birthday party was a classic display of old-school dancehall, with selectors toasting throughout the songs.

Following Metro Media's stint around the turntables, was another veteran sound system, Body Guard, led by another veteran selector, Johnny Guard.

He had heads bopping to Sugar Minott's Tune Een, featuring Bounty Killer, and Under Mi Sensie by Barrington Levy.

These sound systems were popular in an era when sound clashes were very prominent, and the DJs made sure to show their strength in musical warfare by playing a series of dubplates and specials during their sets.

"It's early now, but by later, the entire place gonna ram off. Dem people here turn out to party late, but so far, the vibes cool and later it a guh even better," Sky Juice told The STAR.
