Fuller released by Charlton

Out of favour Reggae Boyz striker Ricardo Fuller will once again be on the hunt for a new club, after being released by English Championship Division club Charlton Athletic yesterday.

Fuller joined Charlton on a one-year deal last season after ending an 11-year association with English Premier League club Stoke City, a club where he had attained cult hero status. The player parted ways with the Potters after seeing his playing time dwindle and not being offered a new contract at the end of the 2011-2012 season.

The forward hoped for a revival of sorts following his move to the English second division, but that failed to materialise with the player never really settling in. Fuller managed only 5 goals in 31 appearances for The Addicks and was beset by myriad injuries, including a back injury, which flared up during the player's medical, ending any chances of a more permanent move. Fuller also suffered with hamstring issues and the recurrence of a troublesome shoulder that first affected the striker in 2010.

The team's manager Chris Powell told the club's official website that Fuller remained a popular player at the club, but after being hampered by injury simply had not shown enough to warrant a new deal.

"After initially missing pre-season, he was always playing catch-up, but he showed us some vintage Ricardo Fuller at times, namely his goal against Peterborough and his performance and goal against Crystal Palace," Powell told the club's official website (http://www.cafc.co.uk).

"He was disrupted by a number of injuries which, at times, halted his rhythm, but he's a real character who boasts plenty of experience. He remains very popular among the players here, but from the club's point of view, every aspect has to be assessed with regards to new deals."

Fuller has played 71 times for Jamaica's national team, finding the back of the net on eight occasions. He is, however, unlikely to join the team ahead of the crucial qualifiers next month.
