Bolt gets off to slow 100m opener

Usain Bolt

The world's fastest man Usain Bolt clocked a pedestrian 10.09 in his opening 100m race of the 2013 season, in the Cayman International Invitational at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex last night.

In one of the rare occasion that the big sprinter failed to break the 10-second barrier, he was chased to the line by Racers Track club teammate Kemar Bailey-Cole, who posted an identical time. Another teammate of Bolt's Antiguan Daniel Bailey was third in a time of 10.23. Most of the talk in the lead-up to the meet had centred on Bolt failing to take part in last week's Jamaica Invitational International meet, due to reports indicating that he suffered a slight hamstring strain. At the meet in Kingston, American Tyson Gay posted a world-leading 9.86. In the women's equivalent, American Carmelita Jeter won the event in 10.95 (+0.4m/s) ahead of the United States Barbara Pierre 11.02, with Jamaica's Kerron Stewart (11.10) third.

In the men's 110m hurdles, Jamaica's Hansle Parchment (13.25) took the event over Barbados' Ryan Brathwaite 13.26 with Shane Brathwaite third in 13.44. There was also success for Jamaica in the women's 400m as Novlene Williams-Mills (50.73) finished ahead of Moushaumi Robinson (USA), 51.19.
