No bail for alleged NCB account hacker

A computer expert who allegedly fleeced millions of dollars from the accounts of unsuspecting NCB customers was denied bail in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's court yesterday.

Charged with money laundering, conspiracy to defraud, simple larceny and unauthorised access to computer data is 25-year-old Christopher Walker from Central Village, St Catherine.

He pleaded not guilty.

Walker is employed to a service provider contracted to the bank.

The court was told that over a period running from December 19, 2012 to April 19, 2013, Walker withdrew funds from the accounts of several of the bank's clients totalling $5,000,000.

The funds were said to be withdrawn without the knowledge of the customers who utilise a retail Internet banking system.

An enquiry by the bank and the police after several complaints were made to NCB, pointed to Walker as the culprit.

The court heard that $2 million of the stolen money has been recovered and that since he has been in custody on April 15, no further reports have surfaced.

The investigating officer sided with the RM not to grant the accused bail because they are conducting further investigations and he may compromise the matter.
