An American man is now in custody in connection with the 400lb of compressed ganja seized in Portland on Monday.

The drug, which reportedly has a street value of $4.5 million, was recovered on the Navy Island, off the coast of Portland.

The suspect, whose name has been withheld by the police, was taken into custody late yesterday evening on suspicion of breaching the Dangerous Drugs Act.

The suspect is schedule to face questioning today from police investigators.

Investigators are continuing their search of the Navy Island to find players who are believed to be connected to the drug trade and who are in hiding.

The drug was found in rice bags and was wrapped in masking tape in mangroves near the old Port Antonio marina.

Two vessels, a dinghy, which had four parcels of the compressed weed aboard and a 4.5 horse powered motor engine attached, along with a 28ft fibreglass boat were seized by the police during the early morning operation.
