David Monk, senior international football development officer for top English Premier League club Chelsea, has encouraged local coaches to vary their approach in order to get the best out of their players.

"It is very important to use varied approaches in order to be successful because players are different and respond to different methods," Monk told STAR Sports, as the Jamaica leg of the DigicelKickStart Clinic came to a close at the Barbican field yesterday.

"At Chelsea, we try to produce creative players so we try not to be too commanding but a varying style will definitely produce better players," he added.

Over 30 coaches participated in the 2 1/2-hour coaching clinic which was added to the programme for the first time this year. It followed Monday's player clinic where four Jamaican youngsters were selected for a week-long stint at the Digicel Academy in Barbados.

While Monk believes the player aspect of the clinic is important, the coach again stressed the importance of developing quality coaches.

"The fact is that you can coach 30 players but if you coach the coaches you can coach thousands of players. Good coaching is fundamental for the development of sport," Monk said.

The official also promised that plans for the coaching programme, in its infancy, will be developed in recent years with the possibility of a longer Digicel coaching clinic, which will also be held in Barbados.

"This is just the first step in a long programme; now that we have had an exchange of information with these local coaches and found out some of the issues that they have, problems they face, we can come back next year with a tailor-made programme," he said.

At end of the programme all coaches were presented with a certificate of participation. Assisting Monk were Kane Cowburn, the club's international football director and Andrew Ottley, international development officer.
