Young Boyz bounced from qualifiers

National coach Wendell Downswell

PANAMA CITY (CMC):

There will be no Caribbean presence at the FIFA Under-17 World Cup later this year after Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago suffered losses in the quarter-finals of the CONCACAF Under-17 Championship on Saturday.

Playing at the Estadio Agust'n Muquita S‡nchez, Jamaica were beaten 4-2 by Canada while T&T went down to hosts Panama by the same scoreline.

The winners will now advance to the FIFA showpiece in the United Arab Emirates from October 17 to November 8.

In the opening game, Jamaica twice led before Canada delivered a punishing second-half performance to run away easy winners.

Khallil Stewart's first-half brace put Jamaica in the driver's seat at half-time with a 2-1 advantage but Andrew Gordon, with a goal in either half, along with strikes from Hanson Boakai and Jordan Hamilton, ensured a successful rally by the Canadians.

Jamaica were ahead after five minutes through Stewart's clinical finish to the far post but Canada were back on level terms when Gordon scrambled the ball past the goalkeeper Nicholas Nelson, after his initial header had found the crossbar.

On the stroke of half-time, Jamaica snatched the lead when Stewart conjured up a brilliant individual effort, to score with a right-footed effort.

The second half proved a nightmare for Jamaica. Boakai hauled Canada level in the 60th before Gordon gave them the lead in the 75th to complete his brace. Hamilton's header 11 minutes from time ended the game as a genuine contest.

In the feature game, Andre Fortune's long-range volley gave T&T a 19th-minute lead before captain Jesus Araya equalised in the 38th minute.

The floodgates also opened for Panama in the second half as substitute Luis Zu-iga (62nd) and Ismael Diaz (79th, 88th), with two goals in the space of 10 minutes, turned back the Trinidadian challenge.

Weah Adams came off the bench to score for Trinidad in the 86th and though the goal added late drama, it did nothing to change the outcome.
