Almost a month since he recorded his best ever season opener of 65.94m at the Jim Minzie Invitational in Ruston, Louisiana, Jason Morgan on Saturday achieved his second mark at or above the 'B' standard mark qualifying him for the IAAF World Athletic Championships in Moscow this summer.

Morgan threw 64 metres to win at the McNeese University Sprint Time Classic ahead of Shaun Haughton 53.55 metres and Brek Christensen of Sam Houston State 49.90m.

In winning, the former Calabar High athlete broke the meet and facility record of 56.88m he set back in 2007. The burly 2012 Olympian was naturally satisfied with his performance.

"Well, I am feeling really good at this time. I have a new and positive approach to what I want to accomplish this year," he said.

"Things are falling into place."

preparation

Morgan revealed that his early season preparation is beginning to achieve the kind of results that will serve him well when the time comes later this season when he hopes to medal at the World Championships in Russia. "My progression is slowly progressing as I continue to remain focused on me and on the positive support of people who never stopped believing in me," he said.

"I will continue to remain humble and patient for what is in store for me this season."

His season opener, which is just six centimetres off the A standard mark of 66 metres, saw Morgan being ranked number one in the world at the time. He has since been supplanted by Australia's 22-year-old phenom Julian Wruk who since March 30 has recorded throws of 66.01m, 66.05m and 66.32m. Morgan's mark now ranks his the second best thrower in the world this year.

"It is a good feeling to have been at the number one spot in the world for three weeks. I am now ranked number two and I have only competed in two meets so I am confident while I continue this journey," he said.

Once ratified, Morgan's 64-metre mark on Saturday will rank at number 10 on the World List for 2013, just ahead of Traves Smikle's 63.48m that was recorded at Intercol Champs on April 5.
