Diandra Grandison, Star Writer
A fairly new scam in which credit is being taken from the phones of Digicel prepaid customers has been uncovered by the telecommunications company. Information reaching THE STAR is that a phone number with the digits '882-3301-0845' is calling unsuspecting Digicel customers, and deducting call credits without their knowledge from their phones. The company is expected to make a formal statement on the matter today. A victim of the devious act, who goes by the moniker Dego, told THE STAR how he lost $500 credit to the scammers. "The number call mi and when mi answer the phone them hang up, mi call it back thinking is one a mi relatives from farin a call mi, then mi hear 'you do not have sufficient credit to make dis call,' the whole a mi credit run off," he said. Dego, who works as a taxi operator, told THE STAR that upon discussing the incident with his clients it was revealed that he was not the only victim. "Mi deh pan di streets and while talking bout it to mi clients, mi realise seh anuh mi one." Dego told THE STAR that all his clients who echoed his concerns were Digicel customers. Nadine Barrett also confirmed she was a victim of the scam twice. "I dont know if they target people with plenty credit but twice me put on more than $500 pon me phone, and dem tek it off," she said. "The first time I didn't know what happened but after I heard about the scam and decided to put almost $800 on my phone and call the number again, it gone." Barrett said from her investigations the 882 part of the number remains but the other number can change from time to time. A Digicel customer service representative confirmed that scammers are indeed responsible for the nefarious act. "It has been going on for a couple of months now, and we are trying our best to track the persons responsible. The number is from a satellite, it's a scamming thing, they use that number to steal credit from customers," she said. The representative told THE STAR, however, that victims unfortunately will not be reimbursed. "It's not something that we can actually provide customers back," she said. |
