RM issues warrant for officer

WESTERN BUREAU:

The Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court has issued a warrant for the investigating officer in an attempted bribery case in which a St James vendor has been charged to bring outstanding documents to court on April 17.

Teddy Parchment, from Glendevon, charged with bribery of a police officer, had his bail extended until April 17, in court on Wednesday.

Allegations are that on December 6, 2012, a member of Superintendent Radcliffe Lewis' police traffic operation in western Jamaica stopped Parchment along the Albion main road in Montego Bay. Subsequent checks revealed that Parchment's driver's licence had expired, and he had no other car documents.

Parchment, the court heard, offered the cop $10,000 not to proceed against him. A sting operation was set up and Parchment was caught handing over J$9,500 and US$500, and subsequently arrested.

Clerk of the Court Natalie Malcolm told Resident Magistrate Carolyn Tai that a police statement and an information CD are still outstanding from the prosecution's case file.

"There is still a statement outstanding from Supt Lewis, and I was told that I would have had the statement today, as well as the CD," said Malcolm.

"I am issuing a warrant for the investigating officer," said RM Tai. "I will set this matter for mention until April 17, Sir, your bail is extended."
