Reggae Boyz will get tune right
Audley Boyd, Assistant Sports Editor

SAN JOSé, Costa Rica:

NATIONAL striker Luton Shelton believes Jamaica's Reggae Boyz will eventually get their tune right, following an error strewn showing in Costa Rica on Tuesday night, which Jamaica lost 0-2, in the CONCACAF final round World Cup Qualifying football match at the Estadio Nacional de Costa Rica.

"It's quite disappointing because we're a much better team than Costa Rica, and we didn't get the result that we wanted," Shelton said.

The player is convinced, however, that some of the team's incohesive play has to do with the fact that there are several new players that have recently been added to the national squad. Since the start of this final round series, four new recruits Joel (Jobi) McAnuff, Jermaine Beckford, Garath McCleary and Marvin Elliott from England have been added to the starting team. The player says that has affected team chemistry, but can be fixed over time.

"It's the first time with these players, so we're not a gelled team as yet to possess the ball going forward as much as possible like we did last year. But at the same time we can improve because we have good players, but we have to come together and do what we have to do for the next couple of games," said Shelton.

Shelton has been playing as a midfielder , but favours playing off the shoulder of defenders.

willing to play

"I haven't been playing striker (out and out) for the national team for a while and I'm always on the left. I think the coach knows best and what he wants. I've been playing on the wing for my club and I've been doing well, so if the coach chooses to put me anywhere I'm willing to play," he said.

"I want to play somewhere where I'm comfortable, where I play every time and I can focus on playing one position. But if the coach puts me in a different position to carry out a particular function I have to do it for the team; I try to be a team player every time, not only an individual who thinks about myself, if I can play other positions I'll work for the team, and do what I have to do for the team."

The loss pushed Jamaica to the bottom of the six-team qualifiers on two points. Panama lead with five, followed by Honduras, Costa Rica and the United States on four, while Mexico have three.

The Reggae Boyz next face Mexico, on June 4 at the National Stadium and Shelton expects changes in their fortunes.

"We'll be at home. When we're at home we're a little bit stronger," he said. "I wouldn't say it'll be easier, but you get your chance to do big things at home, so I think we'll be alright."
