Corporal Fitzroy Bennett, who was arrested on March 19 during a sting operation conducted by the members of the Anti Corruption Branch (ACB), was charged last night for breaches of the Corruption Act. Reports from the ACB are that Corporal Bennett solicited a total of $52,000 over a two-year period from a motorist whom he had arrested for breaches of the Road Traffic Act in order to have the matter thrown out of court. An additional $10,000 was requested from the motorist last week, who contacted the ACB resulting in the sting operation being planned. Corporal Bennett was arrested after he collected the money and has been charged with three counts of corruptly soliciting and four counts of corruptly accepting following a ruling from the director of public prosecutions. He appeared before the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday to answer to the charges and was granted bail at $300,000. He is scheduled to appear before the court again on Tuesday, June 11. |
