Alleged area leader misses second court date

Uriel Humphrey James, the Corporate Area businessman arrested recently in connection with several major crimes, was again absent from The Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court, missing his second consecutive court date on Tuesday.

The defendant, otherwise called 'Rooksie', is also alleged to be the reputed area leader of the Rose Town-based Discipline gang.

James was not brought as he is set to face an identification parade and is scheduled to appear in court today.

According to The Constabulary Communication Network, a Major Organised Crime Anti-Corruption Task Force led operation comprising members of Area 4, the Flying Squad, the Organised Crime Investigation Division and Mobile Reserve was conducted targeting James.

The police team conducted extensive searches and seized several items of evidence at James' Kingston 8 residence, and the home of his mother which is located in Rose Town.

The operation was conducted following high-level meetings with the commissioner and members of the High Command in a strong move to counter the upsurge of violence and general criminal behaviour in the Rose Town community since late 2012.

Police intelligence attributes this increase in violence to James' continued activity and presence in the Rose Town community.

During the search of James' uptown residence, the investigators discovered and seized copies of two witness statements which implicated James in a number of crimes, including several murders and robberies.

The statements were copies of original statements that had been disclosed by the prosecution to James' defence attorneys in accordance with the normal rules of disclosure for the purpose of facilitating the defence's preparation.
