Coming off a back injury that saw her not being able to compete for a month, former Edwin Allen standout high jumper Kimberley Williamson had a confidence boosting season-best 1.83m jump to win at the University of the West Indies Invitational track meet last Saturday. It was only her second competition of the season following up on a 1.80m jump at the Milo Western Relays in February. With next week's Intercollegiate Champs on April 5 and 6, on the immediate horizon and the World University Games (WUG) in Russia later this summer, her ultimate target this season, Williamson was happy with the way she bounced back. "I am pleased because I haven't been doing any high jump training for the past month, so to come out and pull off a 1.83m was a bit of a surprise," said Williamson. "My next competition is Intercol where I intend to set a new season's best." The back strain, she said, was caused by her lifting weights without a support belt. While at Edwin Allen, where she cleared 1.88m back in 2011, the Amazon-like Williamson was used to lifting without a belt, but with the increase in weights and in the frequency with which she lifts triggered the injury. Now in her first year at the University of the West Indies, the biggest challenge for the talented jumper seems to be in balancing school and training as she sees no real threat other than the bar in her quest to break 1.90m by the time the WUG come around in the summer. "I am just trying to remain balanced and remain focused because it's like a country girl going to New York to live," said the psychology major from Lime Kiln in Frankfield, Clarendon. "With the training twice a day and schoolwork with my course, it's a lot of reading, not to mention the campus parties every weekend; it really comes down to balance." Her injury behind her, her sights are now firmly set on competing at Intercol Champs, where she feels she is her greatest threat. When asked about possible rivals at the championships set for the same track in less than two weeks, Williamson had a very simple answer. "The bar." |
