Glory for self, glory for school - Grange

Grange

Holmwood Technical's Gleneve Grange is not only aiming to achieve individual success at this year's ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls Athletics Championships, but she is also aiming to help her school to recapture the girls' crown they lost to Edwin Allen High last year.

"This year, my target is to help take home back the title to Holmwood and give my best in my events," said Grange, who is participating at her sixth Champs.

Competing in Class Two last year, she won the discus (43.32m), finished second in the shot put (13.74m), and placed 10th in the javelin (29.87m), but had to pull out of the heptathlon because of an ankle injury.

This year, the 17-year-old Grange will once again be attempting all four events, but this time in Class One.

Her personal best (PB) for the discus stands at 50.30m, which she threw at last year's Penn Relays. Her PB in the javelin is 33.06m thrown at the Carifta trials two weeks ago; shot put PB is 13.83m, which came at the Jamaica College Invitational meet in 2012; and for the heptathlon, her PB is 4,738 points achieved at the 2011 staging of Champs.

Grange two weeks ago won the girls' under-20 discus event at the Carifta trials and placed third in the javelin to make the Carifta team for the fourth consecutive year. She has also represented the country at two Central American and Caribbean Games and competed in the heptathlon at the 2011 IAAF World Youth Championships in Lille, France.

She was on course to establish a new PB for the heptathlon at the World Youth championships, but was unable to compete in the 800m, which was the seventh and last discipline, because of an ankle injury.

She suffered a minor injury at the start of this season, but was determined not to let it keep her out of action for too long.

"At the start of the season I had a sprained toe that kept me out for a week, and then I just got back up and started training," Grange disclosed. "My family, school and teammates have been a great support system."
