Policeman answers to corruption charges

A police corporal attached to the Westmoreland Police Division appeared before the Savanna-la-mar Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday answering to two counts of breaches of the Corruption Prevention Act.

He has been identified as Mark Wright.

The court was told that in 2012, Wright was on duty when he stopped a motorist who was in breach of the Road Traffic Act.

According to reports, Wright allegedly demanded $20,000 from the motorist in order for him not to be prosecuted. The money was paid over to Wright and the motorist reported the matter to the Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB).

An investigation was subsequently launched and Wright was arrested and charged.

He was offered bail in the sum of $50,000 and is to report to the Whithorn Police Station three times a week as well as surrender his travel documents.

He is scheduled to return to court on June 26, 2013, when the trial is slated to commence.
