Market thieves strike again
Rasbert Turner, Star Writer

Thieves plaguing the Spanish Town Market in St Catherine struck again on the weekend as they made off with several sheets of zinc that was used to cover the facility.

The latest incident happened sometime between Saturday and Sunday night. The Star was informed that the hoodlums ripped the zinc from a section of the roof leaving several vendors vulnerable.

"It is very sad that while the work is being done to repair the roof, persons found it wise to steal the zinc," chairman Norman Scott said.

He said this was now a matter of concern as there was a $600,000 refurbishing exercise under way.

"We have discussions with the Police High Command and it was decided that certain procedures should be followed," Scott said.

Meanwhile, a number of the vendors said thieves are targeting them in the market.

"As you carry your goods come here di tiefing boy dem just pass and tek weh di goods, and sell what dem want and use di rest," a vendor said.

It was the view of many that the criminals prey mostly on persons from rural Jamaica who sell ground provisions.

Meanwhile, Senior Superinten-dent Anthony Castelle said the police would be working to resolve the problem.
