Urinary tract infection

Dear Counsellor:

I went to the doctor because I was urinating often. I was diagnose with urinary tract infection. What is urinary tract infection? What are the symptoms?

Mary

Dear Mary:

Women sometimes get urinary tract infection (UTI). These infections are caused by bacteria from different sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or from your anus that travel to the urethra and up into the bladder. If you feel pain or burning when you urinate (pee), it could be the sign of an infection. If this happens, it is important to get check by a health-care provider right away. Also, remember to always wipe from front to back to keep bacteria away.

Also, drinking lots of water and unsweetened cranberry juice helps when you have a UTI. Eating some yoghurt may also help the vagina maintain the proper amount of acidity to stay healthy.

Remember also to follow your doctor's instructions carefully.
