Smartt predicts number one spot for Windies women

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (CMC):

All-rounder Tremayne Smartt has expressed confidence that West Indies women will soon climb the rankings to be number-one team in world cricket.

The 27-year-old Guyanese cricketer made her prediction after a performance that helped West Indies women beat Sri Lanka by six wickets on Sunday to take a 2-0 lead in the five-match series.

Smart, given the new ball, took two wickets for 14 runs off four overs as Sri Lanka could only muster 73-8 off 20 overs.

"I enjoy playing in this team. We have done well for West Indies and we want to get better," said Smartt who stepped up and forced her way into the team during last month's ICC Women's World Cup.

"The coach and the captain have been doing a great job and once we remain disciplined, we will one day be the number-one team in world cricket".

Her performances in the World Cup helped the Windies to reach the final and move to number two in the ICC one-day team rankings.

Also, her contributions in taking early wickets and a miserly economy rate have helped Windies women win games in recent times.

"I come from a large family. We are five girls and five boys - 10 kids in all at home with me being number 9 - so I grew accustomed to being a member of a 'team'," said the medium-pacer who has been a consistent member of the starting line-up.

"I look out for everyone, that's the way we were brought up to care and look after everyone around".

Smartt has been described as a "hard-working all-rounder" who is also a committed and dedicated team player with a never-say-die attitude.

She is a popular member of the team and has even been voted 'Miss Congeniality' for her pleasant personality and friendliness.

"I like to sit and chat with the girls in the team just to try to understand what's going through their minds and help us improve as a team in any way possible," Smartt added.

West Indies women, who won the opening match by two wickets off the last ball on Friday, meet Sri Lanka in the third T20 on Tuesday.
