Rivoli, New Green set for semi-final clash |

Richard Bryan, Star Writer The semi-finals pairings were confirmed at the past weekend's final round of matches in the South Central Confed Super League. In one semi-final, it will be a battle of the 'oldsters' when New Green will meet Rivoli in a repeat of last year's final, while the other features the 'youngsters' - Appleton against Frazsiers Whip. Frazsiers edged New Green for top spot in Zone A, when they thrashed Super Action 3-0 to end on 22 points, while New Green could only muster a 1-1 draw in their last home game at Brooks Park against Four Path. Rivoli were crowned the winners of Zone B, ahead of Appleton, also on goal difference. Rivoli were idle for the final weekend but Appleton used the opportunity to defeat Bodles 3-0. Both teams ended on 17 points. The semi-finals will begin this weekend on a home-and-away basis. Appleton will host Frazsiers Whip at St Elizabeth Technical, while New Green will host Rivoli at Brooks Park. The views of Appleton's coach Andrew Edwards seem to echo those of the other semi-finalists. Edwards revealed there was no special interest to decide who they play in the semi-finals. "I have no preferences," he boldly said. "I am just glad to be there at the first time of asking and if we're going to win the competition then we must beat everyone." This view, he added, has been instrumental in shaping the mental approach of his team, since the start of the competition. In previous years, all the teams had gotten at least one chance to play each other through a cross-zone format. This year, that aspect was shelved as the organisers tried to reduce costs, in the face of a failure to attract a title sponsor. The teams were hence left with footing the main costs, including referee fees. |
