A Christian man who was charged after he attempted to bribe a police officer, was fined $50,000 or told to serve six months imprisonment when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

Garnett Walker of a Kingston 8 address was before the court on a charge of bribery.

The court heard that on February 13, about 6 p.m., Walker was stopped by the police along Washington Boulevard in Kingston and was about to be given a ticket when he offered the policeman $1,000. He was subsequently arrested and charged.

In court, a character witness, the accused church brethren was present to vouch on his behalf.

The man delivered a flowing tribute on behalf of Walker but this did not augur well with Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey who believed that a man who bribed a police officer was to feel the full brunt of the law.

Subsequently, the accused was ordered to pay the fine.
