Neville 'Teddy' McCook

Noted track and field administrator Neville 'Teddy' McCook passed away yesterday afternoon on the Tony Thwaites Wing at the University Hospital of the West Indies, after a prolonged illness.

McCook, who was 73 years old, had been a life-long servant of local, regional and international track and field and held several positions up until the time of his death.

He served as president of the North America, Central America and Caribbean (NACAC) area and was also an IAAF Council member. He was also a member of the IAAF Development Commission, as well as the IAAF's Finance and Budget Commission.

The former Kingston College student and athlete was first elected to the NACAC presidency in 2007 and was later re-elected in 2011.

McCook was also a former president of the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA), credited for implementing the National Senior Championships team selection policy, and also served as secretary general at the Jamaica Olympic Association since 1997.

Tributes have been flowing in for the well-respected administrator with JAAA President Dr Warren Blake describing his passing as a great loss for the sport.

"It's a great loss for track and field in Jamaica. He made a tremendous contribution to the sport in Jamaica and the entire region," said Blake. "The JAAA wishes to extend its deepest condolences to his family and loved ones in this time of grief, and we offer our full support."

Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller and Olivia 'Babsy' Grange, Opposition spokesperson on Sports, hailed the impact of McCook in the sporting arena both in Jamaica and across the region.

Teddy has given distinguished service to Jamaica and without a doubt was a nation builder who was diligent and disciplined in executing his responsibilities," said Simpson Miller in a release yesterday.

Grange was also saddened by the administrator's passing, remembering him for his dedication and kindness.

"I have always been impressed by his dedication and commitment to track and field. He was a truly loyal Jamaican who was highly respected worldwide," Grange said.

McCook is survived by his wife Sonia and four daughters.
