A new season of the South Central Confed Super League will kick off tomorrow with two games involving the top two teams from last year, New Green and Rivoli. Defending champions New Green of Manchester will travel to Clarendon to play debutants Four Paths. The second game will also be played in Clarendon, but features Rivoli against Spartan at Turner's Oval. This year's league retains the two-zone format, but the cross-zone aspect has been scrapped due to lack of sustainable sponsorship. There is no title sponsor and teams will foot the referee bill. New Green and Four Paths will play in Zone A alongside Super Action of St Elizabeth and three St Catherine teams led by Meadows, Royal Lakes and new comer Fraziers Whip. In addition to Rivoli and Spartan, Zone B comprises Appleton of St Elizabeth, who are making a return after several years of absence, Manchester newcomers Kendal and the St Catherine pair of Newlands and Bodles. Four games across the two zones will be played on Sunday. Super Action will host Fraziers Whip at St Elizabeth Technical field, in Santa Cruz, Meadows host Royal Lakes at Albion Sports Complex, Bodles host Appleton and Kendal entertain Newland at Kirkvine Sports Club. The parish of St Catherine will have the strength of numbers, fielding four of the 12 teams involved. The region's president Peter Reid, however, is cautioning his troupes against repeating the mistakes of last season when two of his charges, Rivoli and Meadows, dominated the preliminary rounds of the league, only to be edged out by New Green. "I say to them, prepare for the competition both on the field of play and off. They must have in place proper management that can carry them through. Be cognisant of what is happening around you and don't be like the proverbial frog who got cooked. The team that won last year came on strong in the latter stages after doing their homework," Reid said. |
