A St Catherine man who has been accused of falsely reporting that he was abducted by a group of men who demanded a ransom for his release is now facing a charge of creating public mischief.

The man whose name is being withheld is now in custody at the Linstead Police Station in St Catherine.

Reports are that the suspect told family members that he was held up by men who demanded a ransom.

It is further alleged that he told the investigators that the men were demanding $30,000 for his release. The police widened their investigations after the man's cellphone was used to call family members.

The man's mother was reportedly contacted during which she spoke with him and he allegedly repeated the demand. After investigations, it was revealed that the cellular phone from which the calls came allegedly belonged to him.

He reportedly backed down with his demand.

Police personnel took him in custody after he went to Linstead to tell them that his captors had released him unscathed.

Further investigation revealed that the man was given a car to operate as a taxi and he failed to make any payments to the owner. It is suspected that he concocted a plan to avoid accountability.
