Jermaine Lannaman, Star Writer

Title-holders St George's College will attempt to move one step closer to a place in the semi-finals of the ISSA/Gatorade/Digicel Manning Cup, when they play last year's beaten finalist Charlie Smith at 3 p.m. in Group J second-round action today at the Constant Sports Complex.

The match will be one of two at the venue today, with the group's other matchup, Camperdown versus Holy Trinity at 1 p.m. being the other.

In the feature, St George's, which leads the group with three points after one game will be looking to end Charlie Smith's campaign.

Charlie Smith, after drawing their first two games, are second in the group on two points, and must win if they are to remain alive in the competition.

"We are upbeat heading into the encounter and will be going for maximum points," said St George's assistant coach, Marcel Gayle.

surprise qualifiers

St George's, which defeated neighbours and surprise qualifiers Holy Trinity 2-0 in their opening fixture, will welcome back to the fore six players, who due to national Under-20 duties missed the encounter.

Charlie Smith, on the other hand, which drew 0-0 with Camperdown in their second fixture, after drawing 1-1 with Holy Trinity in their first, are likely to bank their hopes on forward Lennox Russell and midfielders, captain Tamar Edwards, Roger Bucknor, and Shannon Brown.

"Our plan is to just go there to play good football," said Charlie Smith coach, Jerome Waite.

"Presently we are unbeaten, and one of our aims this season was to finish unbeaten, so if we are able to achieve this and it is good enough to take us to the next round then so be it."

The curtain-raiser, in the meanwhile, will see Camperdown, on one point, looking to win and such make Wednesday's rescheduled fixture against St George's meaningful.

Holy Trinity, in the meantime, will be hoping to win and thus keep their mathematical chance of advancing, albeit far fetch, alive.
