Fowler signs for ANZ's Steel

Towering Jamaican shooter Jhaniele Fowler is extremely excited after securing a deal with ANZ Championship team Ascot Park Hotel Southern Steel.

Fowler, who stands tall at 6' 6", will become the trans-Tasman league's tallest player, eclipsing her compatriot Romelda Aiken, by 3/4 inches.

"The Steel presented itself and I know the Steel is a good team so I am excited to represent them," Fowler told sbs.com.au.

The 23-year-old added that she is eagerly anticipating the opportunity to play alongside some of the world's best players and is expected to join her new teammates in January for preseason preparations.

"I'm very excited. My personal goal is to just get more experience in terms of playing with the elite players," said Fowler. "Our club league is not that strong in Jamaica, so to play in the ANZ Championship is an opportunity that will not only benefit me, but also netball in my country through the knowledge I can share."

"I'm a team person, so I am looking forward to meeting the rest of the team and management."

The powerful shooter is not fazed by the notoriously cold and unpredictable weather of her soon-to-be home of Invercargill, located in New Zaland's deep south.

"I've been to other countries where it has been cold - I will be able to adjust," she said. "I have looked Invercargill up on the Internet and I know it's very beautiful. It's going to be hard adjusting to living somewhere new for the first couple of months but I am excited for the opportunity."

Fowler was a key member of Jamaica's team that finished fourth at the just-concluded Fast5 Netball World Series tournament.

Steel coach Janine Southby is expecting the Jamaican to add significant international pedigree to her squad.

"Someone of Jhaniele's calibre is a real asset to us and obviously her height is going to be a bonus," Southby said. "She's a really strong target for us on the court, she's going to add a different flavour and bring a different culture to the Steel which is exciting."
