Landlord heading to trial for illegal electricity

A landlord is heading to trial in December for disconnecting his tenant's illegal electricity recently.

He is Patrick Folin, who was brought before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Friday for breaching the Rent Restriction Act.

The matter has been set for trial on December 18.

The defendant told the court that he disconnected his tenant's electricity because it was an illegal connection.

"Your Honour, this man refuses to pay my rent and I disconnected his light because it is illegal, and I don't want the police to come and lock me up," Folin said.

However, the defendant later admitted to the court that he had initially rented his premises to the complainant with the illegal electricity and disconnected the light because his tenant had brought it to the attention of the police.

The court was informed that presently the accused, who lives on the same premises as the tenant, has electricity and the tenant is without.

Resident Magistrate Lorna Shelly-Williams said that the matter will have to be set for trial, for the issue to be resolved.
