Cops rub up for safety - Using oils for extra protection

Some police officers stationed in St James have resorted to using spiritual oils and liquids for added protection while on the job THE STAR understands.

Information gathered by THE STAR suggests that ballistic vests, tactical uniforms, helmets and other customary protective gear may not be enough for cops in the second city because of the grave risks they face on a daily basis.

Several sources who claim to be aware of the practice said that some cops 'rub up' openly by applying oils and other creams to their skins usually at the start of their policing duties citing the need for protection.

A police officer who spoke on terms of anonymity told our news team that such a practice would be something that older cops would indulge in but not the younger ones, who are more dependent on their service weapons for protection.

"I'm not disputing the fact that some do it, but it would have to be something done by a particular group who are archaic. Younger police no believe inna dat, dem believe inna dem Glock," he said.

It was more amusement than concern for another cop interviewed by THE STAR as she laughed while commenting that, "poor thing, dem 'fraid."

Acting commanding officer for St James, Superintendent Andrew Lewis, told our news team: "I'm not aware of that," amid chuckles.
