Rasbert Turner, Star Writer
Family members of one of two women killed by gunmen in Windsor Heights, St Catherine, on Saturday night, have moved out of the community fearing further attacks, The Star understands. Two women, Yvonne Smith-Waldron, 51, and Sheryl Desouza-Whyte, 53, both from the community, were shot dead by gunmen shortly before midnight. A Star team visited the community yesterday and many residents condemned the killing. But family members of Desouza-Whyte, say they were not prepared to take anymore chances. Several relatives were observed collecting personal belongings and leaving the area. "We are not going to let them stay here. It was August 14 last year dem murder Sheryl mother and now this, it's wickedness man," a relative told THE STAR. Some said it seem like women are being target these days. "There was a time when the vilest gunman would not hurt a woman or baby, but now it seems like a woman dem a target," a concerned resident said as others echoed similar sentiments. The area was also visited by Member of Parliament Denise Daley and Councillor Norman Scott, who tried to console the grieving relatives. "It is a sad situation and it must be dealt with. It is so bad that the son of one of the deceased had to receive medical treatment due to stress," Scott said. Police said the women were approached by a man who shot them in their heads and abdomens. Many residents expressed shock, saying the women were peaceful and hard- working. A week ago Donna Cowans, 53, of Tawes Pen, also in St Catherine, was shot dead by gunmen in army fatigue. The St Catherine Major Investigation Task Force is probing the murders. |
