Cavalier goalscorer Claudius Blackburn (centre) makes a defensive header during his team's 1-0 Red Stripe Premier League match against Tivoli Gardens at Stadium East, yesterday. Also in the mix are Cavalier's Ajuran Brown and goalkeeper Gariece McPherson (right) as well as Tivoli Gardens' Dane Kelly (second left) and a teammate. - Ian Allen In a day of surprising results, Harbour View continue to steam towards a place in the fast approaching Red Stripe Premier League end of first round final, after a hard fought 1-0 victory over Waterhouse, at the Waterhouse Mini-Stadium, pushing their points tally to 19 points. Sporting Central and Tivoli Gardens both suffered unlikely losses, while Arnett Gardens were held at home in another exciting round of action. At 'Compound', Damion Harwood got the all-important goal on the half-hour mark, keeping the Stars of the East at the top of the pile and relegating Waterhouse to their second loss, in front of their own supporters. Tough matches Harbour will, however, have to remain honest to ensure that they do make it into the big final, with a couple tough matches against Sporting Central Academy and Arnett Gardens on the horizon. Michael Campbell (45th minute), Romeo Parkes (58th) and Khalil Johnson (90th) powered Boys' Town to a workmanlike 3-1 win over struggling Highgate for which Carlos Barrett (61st) got on the scoresheet. The win pushed the Red Brigade into second place, but the Andrew Price-coached team face a tough run in with away assignments to plucky Savannah and Portmore United on their calendar. Sporting Central Academy started the day in second place, but plummeted to fourth after skidding to a surprising 0-1 loss at the hands of struggling Montego Bay United, who now move into ninth place on the table with 10 points, leapfrogging Waterhouse, who were joined on nine points by promoted Cavalier. Cavalier continue to pile on the misery for many-time champions Tivoli Gardens, with an industrious 1-0 win at Stadium East. Claudius Blackburn buried a 61st-minute header from a corner to give Cavalier a much-needed win, in a sometimes exciting contest. Arnett Gardens remain third and within touching distance of the leaders heading into the final two matches of the first round, despite being held 1-1 by Savannah at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex. The Paul 'Tegat' Davis-conditioned team will travel west to play Montego Bay in their next encounter before hosting Harbour View in the final game of the round. In tonight's Monday Night prime time feature, Portmore United, who mathematically remain in contention for a spot in the End of Round Final, will host Humble Lion at Ferdie Neita Park. Both teams are currently on 13 points. |
