$50 fight, $10,000 fine

A woman was fined $10,000 or three months in jail when she appeared before the Corporate Aea Resident Magistrate's Court on Friday to answer to assault charges.

Charged with assault is Marcia Martin who also pleaded guilty and offered an explanation.

The court heard that Martin and the complainant were gambling when an altercation developed during which the accused hit the complainant in her face causing swelling.

Martin explained to Resident Magistrate Lorna Shelly-Williams that the complainant was at fault.

She said, "Your Honour, a gamble we a gamble and me win and she grab up mi winnings so me grab the money and two a we a hold on to it, then we start fight and a so mi box her your Honour".

RM Lorna Shelly-Williams responded by asking Martin, how much money were they fighting for.

Martin said, "is $50, your Honour", and the courtroom erupted in laughter.

RM Shelly-Williams imposed the fine and ordered Martin to give her fingerprints to the police.
