Witness says policeman confessed to killing schoolgirl

A prosecution witness testified yesterday that 24-year-old police constable Rushon Hamilton confessed to him that he killed 14-year-old schoolgirl Jhaneel Goulbourne.

He said the confession was made when he and Hamilton were cellmates at a police station lock-up in November 2008.

The witness said Hamilton told him that he abducted the girl from her gate and placed her in a van.

He said Hamilton told him that he placed the girl in a boat at sea, tied her up and then shot her.

The witness said Hamilton also confessed to him that he tied a block to the body and dumped it at sea.

Gained his confidence

He said he and Hamilton were in the cell for several days and Hamilton had gained his confidence when he made the confession.

Hamilton has been on trial in the Home Circuit Court since last week Monday for the girl's murder.

The Crown is alleging that Hamilton sexually assaulted the girl on October 4, 2008.

A report was made to the police and a few weeks later gunmen abducted the girl from her gate in Harbour View, St Andrew.

The body has not been found.

Attorneys-at-law Valerie Neita Robertson and Peter Champagnie are representing Hamilton.

Justice Lloyd Hibbert is presiding at the trial in the Home Circuit Court.
