Ghetto Youths International shines with new talent

Ghetto Youths International has cultivated and is ready to unleash an eclectic collection of young talent unto the music scene this coming fall.

The record label, which is run by brothers Stephen, Julian, and Damian Marley has gathered its wealth of experience and ear for talent and has been steadily discovering, developing and signing gifted artistes. The roster includes well-anticipated acts such as Joseph 'Jo Mersa' Marley, Christopher Ellis, Jasmin Karma, Black-Am-I, Javaughn and experienced singjay Wayne Marshall.

Throughout the year, the label has released a number of songs from the artistes and is now ready to unveil them in full on an upcoming compilation to be released in late fall. The compilation will include all the above acts as well as tracks from Stephen, Julian and Damian Marley. While most are familiar with the musical genius of the Marley brothers, they are confident fans will be wowed with the talent emerging from the label.

On the roster is Jo Mersa, son of Stephen Marley, who released the official video for his song Bad So this summer. The video was directed by Winston 'Tyson' Mayhew and showcases the deejay's lyrical abilities. Mersa, spent the year cultivating his performance skills on tour with his father in Europe and now the United States.

Crooner Christopher Ellis, son of the legendary Alton Ellis, is focusing on his career. Christopher Ellis, like his father, has a smooth and unique voice, and has been busy in studio. Ellis can be heard on the single Don't Change Your Number, which features Bay-C from the group TOK. He recently performed to a sold out crowd at the Jazz Café in the UK.

Acts like Black-Am-I, Javaughn and Jasmin Karma, have also persevered and shone through in their respective genres. Hard-hitting, conscious lyrics dominate the repertoire of Black-Am-I, who released his Modern Day Freedom single this summer. Since then, the artiste has been creating a stir on the local live music scene.

Up-and-coming act Javaughn is no stranger to music lovers, having been on the scene since his early teen years. The youngster released his first album at the age of 15, titled Superstar, on the Ghetto Youths label. Since then, he has been recording new material for release soon. Also working hard is the only female on the label, Jasmin Karma. The Costa Rican reggae singer hits the right notes on a cover of Peter Tosh's hit Brand New Second Hand. She has been practising her skills on tour in Europe with Stephen Marley.

Wayne Marshall is prepping to release his True Colours album on the Ghetto Youths label early next year. Prior to that, however, the singjay has been hitting the airwaves with his massive collaboration, Go Hard, which features himself, Damian Marley, Bounty Killer, I-Octane, Assassin, Aidonia and Vybz Kartel. The song has been charting locally, and plans are in place to shoot a video this October with acclaimed local director Ras Kassa.

Not to be missed is another collaboration getting airplay, the thought-provoking Independence from Marshall, Damian Marley, Tarrus Riley and TOK which was released on Wednesday, August 1.

All the Ghetto Youths artistes are hard at work and expected to showcase themselves well on the upcoming compilation. Ghetto Youths International was founded by Ziggy and Stephen Marley in 1989. Stephen, Damian and Julian Marley later incorporated the family-owned label. The three brothers have used their musical talent and vast experience to developing new and different acts and styles of music. The untitled compilation follows previous releases like the successful Educated Fools, a one rhythm compilation and the Gang War rhythm compilation.

Smirnoff takes over Ocho Rios for Heroes weekend

This Heroes weekend, Smirnoff Jamaica will be packing truckloads of its various flavours of fine vodka for a weekend getaway of non-stop partying in Ocho Rios, St Ann. The premium vodka brand has plans for consumers that will see a number of originally entertaining events over the holiday.

Smirnoff Jamaica will be hosting two fantastic events in the resort town. Tantrum and Smirnoff Nightlife are two of the most highly anticipated parties on the social calendar this weekend.

According to Marsha Lumley, brand manager Smirnoff, the party does not start without Smirnoff.

"Smirnoff has been consistently delivering great party experiences with best-tasting mixed drinks. The launch of our new Smirnoff flavoured vodkas - blueberry, peach and coconut - are testament to this commitment. Smirnoff Nightlife and Tantrum are events that will bring the Ocho Rios weekend to life and stay true to our premium party experience theme," Ms Lumley said.

Tantrum, which is being held under the theme 'Milan Nightlife', will take place at the Sunset Jamaica Grande Ballroom and will feature a phenomenal line up of top selectors. Slated for the entertainment of this event are Renaissance Disco, Coppershot Disco, Hyperactive Sound and Ashile. Admission to Tantrum is $2,500 presold $3,500 at the gate for general admission, and VIP $4,000 presold, $4,500 at the gate.

Smirnoff Nightlife will be held at Margaritaville Ocho Rios this and every Saturday. Admission is only $500 upon entry with Smirnoff Vodka and Smirnoff Ice specials all night.

Bike Fest, East vs West, set for tomorrow

The much-anticipated Bike Fest presented by Bounce Out Promotions, is scheduled to take place at the Palisadoes Go Kart Track tomorrow.

Bike Fest is a guaranteed fun-filled day for the whole family. Bike Fest will feature Jamaica's best bikers from the western end of the island, Shagga the crew-battling bikers from Kingston, Cutta, and the crew representing the eastern section of the island for cash prizes and the Bike Fest trophy title.

Other biker crews from other parts of the island will also be competing. The bikers will clash in different categories including king of wheely, stunt God and quarter-mile king. Bikers wishing to compete can call 809-3139 for details.

Bike Fest offers free rides all day for the kids, including bumper cars, mechanical bull, train and rock climber.
