Mico gear up for Intercol competition

RAYMOND GRAHAM, Star Writer

Mico University will play host to the 2012-2013 Inter-Collegiate Sport Competition, which will get under way on Saturday with several national representatives in various sports expected to be on show for their various colleges and universities.

Several activities will take place in a one-day rally format, which will begin at 9 a.m with an opening ceremony and dress parade.

For Saturday's opening day of competition, there will be basketball, male football, badminton, table tennis and netball, which will take a FastNet format.

The football competition will see some 16 teams in action, as it will kick off the opening fixture of the Greg Garrell Knockout competition, where G.C. Foster College are the defending champions. Four matches will be played at the Mico field, with the other four to be played on the neighbouring Wolmer's Boys field. One of the marquee games of the day will see the defending champions going up against the home team, where all eight winners will advance to next Tuesday's second round of the competition.

St Hugh's High will host the preliminary round of matches for the netball competition, with teams moving over to the Mico courts for the semi-finals and finals. Defending champions of the FastNet competition are the University of the West Indies and it is expected to be a UWI/Mico clash in the final, with both teams boasting several members of the Sunshine Girls, which just returned to the island after a three-match series against England. The UWI team will be led by captain Nadine Bryan, Malysha Kelly and former Miconian Vanessa Walker. For Mico the likes of Kimone Tulloch, Patricia McCalla and Vangalee Williams will be on display.
