Scores of residents in sections of Portland and St Catherine have been affected by the heavy rainfall that has been pelting the country since the weekend.

The National Works Agency (NWA) in a press release yesterday, said efforts have been hampered to clear several roadways in the Buff Bay Valley in Portland, which have been rendered impassable because of land slippages.

The agency said heavy rains pelting the parish have prevented its work crew from using heavy-duty equipment to remove boulders, mud, tree trunks, and other debris blocking roads in the Silver Hill and Section communities.

The NWA also said that there is no alternate route and and residents are being urged to use the Buff Bay Valley end of the corridor.

Residents in Silver Hill and adjacent communities are urged to use the route from Papine.

Chairman of the Portland Parish Council Benny White, says despite the heavy downpour since Friday, only the Buff Bay Valley has been significantly affected.

Meanwhile, sections of Job Lane in Spanish Town, St Catherine, was also flooded yesterday, and residents had to be using board and zinc to keep out water from their homes.

In Irish Pen, residents were cursing the weather as a number of them were flooded out. "Since the new scheme build the channel that usually take away the water block. A trench built near the house dem no clean properly so the water just running through the houses," one distress resident told THE STAR.

Yesterday, several motorists were trapped in the Bog Walk gorge after it became impassable, resulting in motorists having to use the alternate routes of Barry and Sligoville. The motorists were later freed. Several cars had also shut off in flood waters at the Old Harbour Road/Spanish Town Bypass roundabout.

Parish disaster coordinator for St Catherine, Patricia Lewis, said reports of flooding have been received from several communities. "We received reports of flooding at Church Pen, Old Harbour Road, and other areas, but no reports of death or injury," Lewis said.

She told THE STAR that personnel are in a state of readiness to respond if it becomes necessary.

Late last night, police issued a release saying several roads were flooded in the Corporate Area. These included:- ¯ Chelsea Avenue, Kingston 10

¯Spanish Town Road (vicinity ofOakland Drive) Kingston 13

¯Maxfield Avenue, Kingston 10

¯Marcus Garvey Drive

Mandela Highway

Angels main road in Spanish Town, St Catherine

Hagley Park Road (in the vicinity of Portia Simpson Miller Square)

Drew's Pen Road (leading to Barry main road)

In addition, the cops advised motorists to exercise extreme caution when using the Sligoville main road.

The Meteorological Service of Jamaica said that a flash-flood warning remains in effect for all parishes until 5 a.m. today.

The Meteorological Service of Jamaica, in release yesterday, said that several areas have reached threshold values of rainfall and some land slippages have been reported in low-lying areas.

A significant improvement in the weather, the MET service said, is not expected until later today.
