Tune has the upper hand

Jimmie, Star Racing Writer

UPPA TUNE flew at exercise Sunday morning and should turn the tables on DOUBLE BUTTON and KAL KAL in tomorrow's seventh race at a mile.

The three-year-old United States-bred colt clocked an incre-dibly fast 1:05.3 for five and a half furlongs, in a bullet gallop Sunday, the last five in 59.0, his best ever workout in 12 starts.

Taken out of his comfort zone in his last race, a 1000-metre round sprint, UPPA TUNE disputed the lead in splits of 23.0 and 34.4 to finish third behind BRILLIANT LAD and REAL VIBES MACHINE on August 25.

A better pacer than sprinter, UPPA TUNE lost back-to-back races against DOUBLE BUTTON and KAL KAL in two prior starts last month. He held two-length leads to the furlong pole in both races, 1500 and 1820 metres, but was caught inside the last half furlong on each occasion.

In addition to having the handicaps in his favour for the rematch, UPPA TUNE has never worked this well and only need report as sharp as he looked Sunday morning to run rivals into the ground.

At the weight, DOUBLE BUTTON should have no chance of repeating her August 6 victory over the colt as she was in receipt of 14lb when beating him by two and a quarter lengths at 1500 metres.

Coming in at 55.0 kilos, sitting a kilo off the colt, DOUBLE BUTTON has been hit with a 12lb swing in the scale, ruling out her chances of lugging the weight and catching UPPA TUNE.

KAL KAL is also worse off than when she caught and beat UPPA TUNE at 1820 metres. She was nine pounds lighter that afternoon, now she's carrying 55.0, conceding a five-pound swing to the colt.

Trainer Ian Parsard has called in front-running rider Shane Ellis to partner UPPA TUNE. Ellis does well aboard lone-speed runners and should make no mistake with UPPA TUNE, especially after that impressive flyer Sunday morning.

It should be a good day for the Parsards as his father, Harry, seems to have found a gem of a horse in the two-year-old COUNTRY TRAIN. The filly is bidding for a hat-trick of wins after putting down 1:00.4 to dismiss ALISON at 1000 metres round on August 29.

She beat ALISON by five lengths and had handed CC COLQUHOUN a similar whipping on August 4, making it next to impossible for that duo to reverse those placings.
