Intwo days it will be one year since deejay Vybz Kartel was incarcerated. On Friday, September 30, 2011 Jamaica was rocked by news that arguable the most controversial deejay was taken into custody by the police. As information trickled in, THE WEEKEND STAR would learn that the deejay, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, was arrested along with three companions at a hotel in New Kingston. Now one year later, the deejay is still languishing behind bars. Below is a timeline of some of the major things that have taken place since his arrest and comments from colleagues, lawyer and fans.
THE ALLEGATIONS The police claimed that on July 11, 2011 Kartel along with other men conspired to murder Barrington 'Bossie' Burton, a 27-year-old businessman/promoter from Gregory Park, St Catherine. Burton was murdered while he was standing with friends along Walkers Avenue in Gregory Park. The entertainer and five others are also alleged to have murdered Clive 'Lizard' Williams. Williams was reportedly beaten and stabbed to death on August 16 in Havendale, St Andrew. His body has not been found. The other men charged are fellow deejay Shawn Campbell, more popularly known as Shawn Storm; Cairo Jones, Shane Williams, Andre St John and fashion designer Calvin Haye. The police also alleged that a ganja spliff was found among Kartel's belongings at the hotel where he was picked up. Kartel is also accused of trying to pervert the course of justice. The police reported that on October 29, Vanessa Saddler went to the police to report that she had been robbed by Clive 'Lizard' Williams, one of the men whose murder Kartel had been charged with. THE CHARGES The first charge to be laid against the deejay was possession of ganja. On October 4, Kartel would be slapped with charges of murder, conspiracy to murder and illegal possession of a firearm. Less than three weeks later he was charged with yet another murder. Surprisingly, the charges didn't stop there as the ace deejay was later charged along with one of his protégé's Vanessa 'Gaza Slim' Saddler with perverting the course of justice. THE LEGAL FIGHT On October 14, 2011 Vybz Kartel made his first appearance in court. Scores of journalists and supporters turned out to get a glimpse of the now embattled deejay. It was expected that his attorneys, Michael Deans, Tom Tavares-Finson and his son Christian would have made a bail application. That however did not materialise and Kartel would be remanded until October 26. On that day, THE WEEKEND STAR caught up with Tanesha 'Shorty' Johnson, Kartel's common-law wife outside the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court where family and followers streamed out yet again to show their support for the incarcerated entertainer. At the time she said, "Based upon all this lock up thing, the kids dem traumatised bad because di morning when dem come them carry him from the hotel come a di house, and ma big son Adijah Palmer him start cry and run up and dung and all a dat. Akeel (Kartel's other son) guh to school, mi get a call from him teacher sey mi muss come fi him because him just keep on crying. Weh dem have him (Vybz Kartel) suh long fah, him need fi come home now to him children dem, cuz him children worried bout him an him is a loving father." Despite the support Kartel was again remanded. In December after weeks of court appearances he was granted $3 million bail on one of the murder charges in the Supreme Court. Nevertheless he remained behind bars because of the other charges against him. On June 21, Kartel would taste some success when one of the charges was thrown out. The artiste was reportedly freed of possession of ganja in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court. SCANDAL In November 2011, six policemen who were assigned to the Gun Court Remand Centre were transferred after they were allegedly caught on camera taking money from a close relative of Vybz Kartel. Sources said that investigators from the Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) followed one of the policemen from the Gun Court Remand Centre to the home of a close relative of the deejay where he was videotaped taking money from her. It is alleged that the video also showed one policeman accepting money from a suspect in one of Kartel's murder cases in exchange for his being allowed to visit the deejay in a restricted area of the lock-up. A NEW LOOK In March of this year, in the midst of his legal troubles, Vybz Kartel appeared before the court with a new look. Kartel was no longer sporting extensions, he was now donning a low hair cut. When questioned about his new look Kartel reportedly said, "Mi a change up mi look, it look more decent." REUNIONS AND FALLOUT'S In May rumours would begin to spread that Vybz Kartel and his former business partner Corey Todd had reunited despite a bitter fallout months earlier. The rumours proved to be true after Todd released a statement saying, "We started communicating shortly after his incarceration; it was our intention not to make this public knowledge until his release however we can no longer patiently wait for that day. In June the Gaza Prefect Popcaan would break his silence after months of speculation that he was no longer a member of the Vybz Kartel led group. At the time word reaching THE STAR was that Popcaan had not visited the deejay during the many months that he had been incarcerated. In a release Popcaan said, "I have never said and will never say I am not a part of Gaza. Gaza is my original home and foundation and I will always remain loyal to the Gaza." A NEW LABEL Amid his legal battles, there came even more news from the 'Gaza' camp that the 2007-formed Portmore Empire had been disbanded. In a statement to THE STAR the embattled deejay said, "Dancehall fans worldwide, it is with great regret that I, Adidja Palmer, have decided to disband the Portmore Empire. Further the statement noted that Portmore Empire members, Vanessa 'Gaza Slim' Saddler and Leroy 'Tommy Lee' Russell were moving on with their careers under a newly formed label, PG 13. VYBZ KARTEL 'THE AUTHOR' On July 6, Kartel would release his first book while behind bars. The highly anticipated book, 'Voice of the Jamaican Ghetto' was copyrighted in August 2011 in the United States.
