Concerns raised about 'suitcase' funeral service providers

The St Catherine Parish Council has expressed concerns about the number of 'suitcase' funeral service providers in the parish.

It was revealed at the council's general meeting last Thursday, after chairman of the council Norman Scott told councillors he got an approved list from the police.

Scott told the councillors that the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) said there are five funeral homes that are responsible for different zones in St Catherine.

" The homes on the list are Sunset, Spanish Town, Robert's, Empathy and Morgan's Funeral homes, these are the ones listed by the JCF in St Catherine," Scott said.

Devon Wint of the Pointhill division insisted that the group needs to be regulated.

"These are just persons who decide they need more and they are not able to adequately care for the bodies, " Wint said.

He said persons have complained that when they tried to relocate the remains of their loved ones they are overcharged by the 'suitcase' operators.

Meanwhile, the councillors asked the chairman to meet with the police as the problem must be dealt with urgently.
