Case starts for ... COP stoned, STABBED at store

A case involving a plain clothes cop who was stoned and stabbed close to his heart during a heated dispute in a downtown Kingston clothing store on Friday, was delayed when it appeared in court.

The owner of the clothing store and the store clerk, who have been charged in the incident, were each given $250,000 bail in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

They are Sandra Smart and Jerome Carwin who have been charged with attempted murder.

Also, Joyce Milling and Sashayle Gayle who have been charged in the same incident had their bails extended.

Milling has been charged with assault occasioning bodily harm and Gayle has been charged with unlawful wounding. All four accused persons are to return to court on October 24, when the matter will be mentioned as the file is incomplete.

Allegations are that on September 14, the complainant and his companion went shopping in a clothing store for an outfit.

It is alleged that during the visit to the store, an argument developed after the complainant's companion was told by the store clerk and the owner of the store that she could not fit the outfit that she wanted.

"Come out of my store, a so unuh gwaan like unuh a buy and unuh nuh have no money," Smart is alleged to have said to the complainant's companion.

The court heard that the verbal insults between the complainant's companion and Smart resulted in a fight between both women.

It is alleged that the complainant who identified himself as a policeman attempted to put an end to the fight between both women, however, he was stabbed in his chest by Carwin with a ratchet knife.

The court also heard that the two other accused women, Milling and Gayle got involved in the dispute and threw stones at the cop, injuring his hand and his shoulder.

The plain clothes cop was reportedly rescued by a nearby store owner and taken to the Kingston Public Hospital where he was treated and released.

The cop who is a constable told the court that he got five stitches because of the incident.
