Police Commissioner Owen Ellington said the addition of five new 54-seater Volvo buses to the Jamaica Constabulary Force fleet will help them in their fight against crime.

"It is a great gesture that the buses have been added. It can assist with our mass deployment. It is also well timed as there is a need for them," Commissioner Ellington told The Star.

He said the vehicles will be assigned to Mobile Reserve, Support Services and the Training Branch at Twickenham Park.

The Jamaica Defence Force was also the recipient of five 54-seater Volvo Buses.

The handover was done at the Jamaica Urban Transit Company depot in Spanish Town, St Catherine, on Friday.

Minister of Transport Omar Davies said the donation came as a result of a request made by Security Minister Peter Bunting.

He said, after making a submission in Parliament, the rest was history. Bunting implored the recipients to care for the buses. He said it was very important to strengthen their operations.

Meanwhile, head of communications at the JUTC Reginald Allen said the buses are similar to those in the company's fleet.

"These are very expensive vehicles and I hope that It will benefit the security forces very well in their operation, " Allen said.

It was revealed that each bus cost $30m.
