New-look KC, Bridgeport begin title pursuit |
|||||
![]() Hayles Jermaine Lannaman, STAR Writer Kingston College (KC) and Bridgeport, who are both sporting new coaches, will begin their ISSA/Gatorade/ Manning Cup campaign today. KC, who are now being guided by Donovan 'DV' Hayles, following the resignation of Trevor 'Jumpy' Harris, will host Meadowbrook at Clovelly Park in Group G, while Bridgeport, who are now being coached by Tyrone Roberts, following the departure of Anthony Patrick, will entertain Haile Selassie at Bridgeport in Group D. In other matches, Norman Manley, who last year surprisingly failed to progress beyond the preliminary round, will be at home to Greater Portmore in Group A, Tivoli will host Innswood in Group D, José Marti will travel to Donald Quarrie and Oberlin will welcome St Andrew College in Group F, while Pembroke Hall will travel to St Andrew Technical in Group G. All matches start at 3:30 p.m. At North Street, KC, who close to a month ago had to deal with the resignation of former coach, Trevor 'Jumpy' Harris due to personal reasons, are expected to get the better of Meadowbrook, who in recent seasons, have failed to progress beyond the preliminary round. KC, who for the past two seasons have been a title threat, however, will have to get the job done without three of their main players, Jorghino James, Tazio Gilpin and Jason Greenland, who have all opted to make the trip north and attend sixth form at Wolmer's. "I have been with the team now for close to three weeks and what I see here is a fair amount of talent," said Hayles. "What we are doing at this stage is to look to pick up as the season progresses, and should we advance from the first round, we could do a lot of damage," he added, before listing Kyle Smith, Allan Morgan, O'Brian Duncan and Aldare Steele as players the team will depend on. Bridgeport, in the meanwhile, who saw long-standing coach, Anthony Patrick making the trip west to Clarendon College, who participate in the rural area daCosta Cup, are also favourites to get their first three points against perennial strugglers Haile Selassie. Patrick has been replaced by Tyrone Roberts, who used to coach the school's Under-16 team, and who despite not writing off Haile Selassie, is confident of making a winning start. "We are looking forward to coming out of the first round, and make at least the second round," said Roberts. Roberts lists Ramone Howell, Nico Williams Ryan Swyer, and Luther White as players he is looking forward to for outstanding performances.
